Freetown, Sierra Leone — November 30, 2023

Alvin, a celebrated Sierra Leonean entertainer, and outspoken advocate, is now on the run after escaping from Pademba Road Prison during the violent events of November 26, 2023, when armed individuals launched coordinated attacks on military barracks and detention centers across Freetown in what the government has called an attempted coup.

The attack, which left several civilians and soldiers dead, led to a massive prison break at Pademba Road, allowing hundreds of inmates to escape, including Alvin, who had been in pre-trial detention under controversial circumstances.

Widely recognized for his work in media and entertainment, Alvin built a national following not just as a celebrity, but as a fearless voice against injustice. Through social media, public appearances, and radio programs, he frequently criticized government corruption, abuse of power, and the silencing of dissent — especially among youth. He used his platform to expose police brutality and arbitrary arrests, often naming officials and demanding accountability.

In early November 2023, Alvin was arrested by state security forces. Though no formal charges were brought against him, insiders believe his detention was politically motivated, intended to silence his growing influence and public criticism of the regime. His arrest sparked outcry from civil society groups and international observers, many of whom questioned the legality of his detention.

Following the November 26 coup attempt, Alvin fled the prison amid the chaos and reportedly escaped the country later that night with his immediate family. His current whereabouts remain unknown. Since then, his family home in Freetown has been raided several times by security forces. Relatives including his younger siblings and elderly mother, have been detained, interrogated, and in some cases released, only to be re-arrested in ongoing efforts by the police to extract information on his location.

Human rights organizations in Sierra Leone have condemned the government’s actions, calling the treatment of Alvin and his family “a clear pattern of political persecution.”

“Alvin is not a criminal. He’s not a soldier. He had no part in any coup. He is being hunted simply because he used his voice and his platform to speak the truth. This is about silencing dissent.”

Alvin is among several high-profile individuals now wanted by authorities in connection with the events of November 26, including Captain TL Conteh, activist Fatmata Koroma, political figure Amadu Koita, and Ibrahim Saidu Kamara. However, unlike others, Alvin had no known military or political affiliations, only a reputation for exposing abuse and empowering young people through his public influence.

The government of Sierra Leone imposed a nationwide curfew immediately after the attacks and has since ramped up arrests of suspected coup collaborators. Dozens of people remain in detention, while reports of intimidation and arbitrary arrests continue to emerge.

As the country reels from one of its most violent political crises in recent years, Alvin’s case stands out, not just as a story of escape, but as a reminder of the risks faced by public figures who dare to speak out.

For now, Alvin remains in hiding, fearful for his life and safety. But for many in Sierra Leone, his voice though silenced for now, remains a powerful symbol of resistance in the face of repression.
