Suppliers of diet to inmates in all twenty-one correctional service centres across the country have threatened to stop supply because of the failure of the Sierra Leone Correctional Service to pay them for supplies made for the past ten months.
A spokesman for the Sierra Leone Correctional Service blamed the Ministry of Finance for the non-payment of diet suppliers. He confirmed that, for the past ten months, no diet supplier across the country has been paid a dime.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that, they were aware of the problem but had nothing to do about it. “It’s a matter for the Ministry of Finance”, a spokesman said.
A senior official at ONS (Office of National Security) described the situation as ‘frightening’.
The Ministry of Finance has repeatedly failed to honour payment commitments made to diet suppliers since October last year.
“We are fed-up with their lies…We no longer believe a word they say now…They have lost credibility with us”, a diet supplier in Sefadu, Kono district said last night.
The Acting Director General of the Sierra Leone Correctional Service declined to comment. He referred the Global Times to the supervising Ministry of Internal Affairs.
