The main opposition Sierra Leone Peopleโ€™s Party(SLPP) has announced that it is deferring the conduct of the flagbearer election initially slated for 5th – 7th October to 14th – 15th October in Freetown.
The announcement which was made Friday did not state reason/s for the deferment of the conduct of the much anticipated election of the partyโ€™s Presidential candidate for the 2018 election.
Global Times sources, however, intimated that the delay is to provide the new executive ample time to kick start the process of post-convention reconciliation and to mobilize resources for the flagbearer election.
The election of the National Officers of the party and the flagbearer were to have been done consecutively in the eastern city of Kenema.
But party stakeholders in a meeting with the PPRC about two weeks ago agreed to split the two elections. While the National Officers was subsequently conducted in Kenema from October 15 to 17, the election for the presidential candidate was deferred to 5th to 7th October in Freetown.
In a meeting with the flagbearer aspirants on Thursday at the Kona Lodge in Freetown with the new executive, it was resolved that the election be delayed for at least one week to put the party on a proper footing.
